Objectivity – Having an outside, objective viewpoint is valuable no matter what the task. And, when it comes to something that you are as involved in and as passionate about as your sport, it’s truly invaluable. See below for more on this.
Structure – Your training needs structure. Humans function better when they have a plan or routine to follow. It works at work, it works at home, and it works in training. A coach can help you build structure, a routine, that not only works, but works in the confines of your life. You’ve probably heard that coaching is part science and part art. Knowing the training concepts is where the science comes in. But structuring an athlete’s training week is the art.
Accountability – It’s good to know that someone is expecting something of you, that they will be looking over your training files and expecting to see certain things. But beyond the basic accountability of just performing the work, it’s important to have someone objectively reviewing that work and helping you perform that work better and more efficiently. Having to file a report also helps with focus.
OUFFF)
Collaboration – Synergy is real, and two heads are better than one. Each athlete in unique, and the trick is to discover what works best given your individual circumstances. Together we can do that. But I can’t think of a single athlete that has done it alone.
