While we are gently freezing here in Canada, our national team is now training in Maui, Hawaii.
We hope to have some exclusive news here on Trimes for you.
But last weekend, another warm country (Chile) was the place to be for some young triathletes looking for early ITU points.
André Paul Baillargeon (Victoria)
Cole Griffin Ross Stewart (Victoria)
Matt Vierula (Ottawa)
(Ontario and BC … mmm I have seen that somewhere …)
just compete 2011 Vina del Mar ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup
Short resume of their race : Cole got a flat ! Matt finished one spot off the points and Andre Paul finished 17th in the points !
The Brits won again … (What … there too !!!)
Here is a few words from Matt Vierula (Ottawa Bytown Storm)
Nice early race to start off the 2011 season. All three of us came down to Vina del Mar to get some ITU points and test our fitness on our way to the Brazil Fast Tri on January 16th where we will compete in a team super sprint race.
Race conditions
Wetsuit swim (16-17 oC), ocean
Overcast ~18oC
This was Cole’s Olympic distance debut and he started the race very well, leading out of the water with a small group of four. Unfortunately, he got a flat tire one lap into the race and did not finish.
AP swam well but just missed the 2nd group out of the water. He biked solo for about 15km before being caught by the main chase pack. He went out strong on the run and held on to finish 17th.
I started my swim with several punches/kicks to the face (I now have a nice bruise surrounding the cut under my eye) but I made up some time on the 2nd lap. I came out of the water with 3 other guys who worked really hard on the bike. We caught a bunch of people and formed the main chase pack. Our group got off the bike 3min behind the leaders because the Brits in the lead pack were hammering the ride to stay away from Bowden. I ran a steady 10k into 21st place.
