Lukas Verzbicas can outrun just about everyone he races. Now he’s outrunning himself. With a time of 14 minutes, 6.78 seconds, Verzbicas broke his own national indoor high school 5K record at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in New York on Friday. He set the previous record in 2009 with a time of 14:18.42. So he is still improving.
“My best friend and the nation’s top triathlete Kevin McDowell was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer yesterday,” he said. “I found this out while at school, which was a complete shock to me. This weekend I’m running for him. So now I’m running to win and more. We can talk more after my race Friday.” Verzbicas didn’t want to talk any more specifically about his races, but that he’d have more to say after the 5k.
So Verzbicas confirms, he will do one more year of triathlon for his friend Kevin McDowell.
