Sorry to be late on this one.
USA – WOMEN
Olympians :
2000 :
– Joanna Zeiger (4th)
– Sheila Taormina (6th)
– Jennifer Gutierrez (13th)
2004 :
– Susan Williams (3rd)
– Barbara Lindquist (9th)
– Sheila Taormina (23rd)
2008 :
– Laura Bennett (4th)
– Sarah Haskins (11th)
– Julie Ertel (19th)
Facts :
– 2000 = Best ranking ever at the Olympics for three athletes of the same nation (3 in top 15) (Equal with Switzerland Women Beijing 2008 and Germany Men Beijing 2008)
– 3 athletes at each games.
– So far, only Taormina is two time Olympian (this shows the deepness of the American field)
– 3 athletes qualified each years
– A 23rd place is the worst ranking of all time
2009 – Who ?
Sarah Haskins : 4th Dextro Ranking
Sarah Groff : 17th Dextro Ranking
Mary Beth Ellis : 34th Dextro Ranking
Laura Bennett : 43rd Dextro Raking (2008 Olympian)
2010 – Who ?
Laura Bennett : 10th Dextro Raking (2008 Olympian)
Sara Haskins : 14th Dextro Ranking
Sarah Groff : 20th Dextro Ranking
2011 – Now… Who ?
USAT Olympic Selection criteria :
– Two highest placing athletes at London if they finish in top 9 are automatically qualified
– Top 9 at San Diego for the other athlete on the team
– If nobody achieve this top 9 at San Diego, there will be a discretionary selection
Ranking, order acording to ITU Olympic Simulation:
– Sarah Haskins (America Champion) (49th Dextro Ranking)
– Gwen Jorgensen (World Qualifier #2) (11th Dextro Ranking)
– Laura Bennett (Qualification list #5) (8th Dextro Ranking)
– Sarah Groff (Qualification list #8) (3rd Dextro Ranking)
– Seriously, what a team they have. Jorgensen and Groff already qualified in London with respectively a 2nd and a 7th place.
– The battle for the third spot will be between Haskins and Bennett. But is there really a battle ? Bennett has the ability to achieve the top 9 required at San Diego to get the automatic selection. If she doesn’t, there will be a discretionary selection (because I don’t think Haskins will be top 9. And if she comes top 9, she will still have to beat Bennett). If it comes down to a discretionay slot, Bennett is an easy choice. 4th in Beijing in 2008, 5th at the World Championship this year, 4 top 10 out of 5 WCS start this year…
You have your team. Jorgensen, Groff, Bennett. Is there a bettter team out there ? Maybe the Australians, maybe not. Don’t forget that the worst performance ever by the Americans on THE day is a 23rd place. When we look at the name here and when we strictly think on an »on paper » way, this record should stand…. »On paper »….
Next : USA – MEN… Should be an interesting one…
Better team > Canada? If we get 3 spots and our top are really back at the top of their game… We can have THE team. Also, don!t forget the Swiss > spirig
