Reid COOLSaet, just won the Trimes 2012 local hero/favorite award (again!)
Now, Canada’s top marathoner is doing his part to make sure young athletes coming up behind him will have it a bit better.
When the call went out last week for last-minute donations to help build a world-class track and field facility at the university, the 32-year-old Hamilton native didn’t hesitate, chipping in his $10,000 winnings from the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon.
“Had I not won that good prize purse at Toronto, I wouldn’t even be in the position to be able to do that,” Coolsaet said from Kenya, where he’s been training for the past month.
“I guess part of me was thinking, ‘Ah well, it’s a bit of a bonus anyways.’ I didn’t expect to get as much (prize money) as I did. One way I can justify dishing out that much money,” he said.
An international-calibre track in Guelph has been in the planning for a year, but organizers have had to move quickly over the past week after an anonymous donor chipped in $1.5 million for a new football field, with the provision it be built by next season.
