Strava…Get On it!

Ever wonder who rides ‘your’ 90′ loop? Or where the pros ride in Europe?  Who has ridden the climb by your home the quickest?

Well, with growing popularity Strava does all these things for you.  If your unfamiliar with this sport networking site, pay it a visit and sign up free for a basic account.  Essentially, you join a sporting community and upload your workout files (GPS) to share or just track your hours.  It also offers a great way to procrastinate things like mowing the lawn or painting that fence as you can easily get lost searching for friends, segments, pro cyclists/triathletes etc.

On the triathlete scene some good follows include:

Jesse Thomas

Jarrod Shoemaker

Kyle Jones

Paula Findlay

Will Clarke

Simon Whitfield

and other notable Canadian Olympians such as:

Catherine Pendrel

Clara Hughes

Although not quite the norm yet , some of these athletes will upload race files with power so you can really see what is going on during a WTS or 70.3 event.  Check out Andrew McCartney’s breakaway group ride file from Yokohama where he placed an impressive 7th and Jesse Thomas’ three-peat victory clinching run file from Wildflower just recently.  Lets hope some of the aforementioned athletes post their Madrid WTS files from this weekend!

Not only is Strava a great way to lurk others rides/runs/hikes but it also can serve as extrinsic motivation.  Often when riding I’ll push that little bit more on a climb gambling that someone has made a segment out of it.  You’ll explore more rides within your area and when you traveling to races or holidays.  Either way it is free and a good waste of time. Enjoy!
