Here’s what Canadian Pro triathletes Cody Beals and Taylor Reid have to say about their race at the 70.3 World Championship. Cody Beals finished 22nd and Taylor Reid had to DNF due to a mechanical problem.
Cody Beals:
I arrived at my first Ironman 70.3 World Championship with fine form and high expectations. After riding my way into a good position, I had an alarming front tire blowout on the mountain descent. It was a relief to still finish the race, although I was out of contention for my top ten goal. Despite my disappointment, I’m already drawing many lessons and positives from the experience. I’m eager to channel my frustration into some late season racing.

Taylor Reid:
I just had some bad luck out there on the course. I was running out of Transition with bike hit a bump and lost control of the bike it fell on the chain side and I tripped over the bike. I did not go down that hard. When I picked it up the derailleur hanger was broken. So the day was over. The Ironman race crew responded very quickly and if the mechanical problem could have been fixed it would have been done in Tour du France style. Nothing I could do but I will race again. Just few cuts so I will recover very quickly.
I went and watched and cheered my teammates Heather Wurtele and Magali Tisseyre to great performances. I had my best swim to date. The swim started out very fast with a far bit of pushing. I was able to work my way up the group and hold on till the end.
I look forward to putting all the peaces together at Cozumel in a few weeks. The atmosphere was amazing. Huge crowds and amazing support, I look forward to racing another world Championship down the road and soaking up the crowds on the racecourse.
